Bradley Whitford and Chester Collins may change the way you look at fruit snacks … literally.

It’s very rare when a brand is brave enough to poke fun at their own marketing foibles. So for General Mills-owned Gushers to do so three decades later by turning an unintentionally horrifying ad from the ’90s into a genuine horror film starring Bradley Whitford, it is a masterstroke.

FruitHead is a darkly comedic and entertaining short horror film featuring Whitford as the fictional commercial director behind the very real and unsettling “Fruitheads” spot that unwittingly caused nightmares for a generation of kids. The film, created in partnership with Imagine Entertainment and directed by Mike Diva, incorporates the actual ad into the storyline, which imagines the terrifying possibility of the snack’s effects being “too real” when Whitford’s overly ambitious director decides to use “supernatural assistance” to make his young actors more believable.

Creator Chester Collins’ portrayal of the unfortunate child actor-turned-vengeful-creature eternally scarred by Whitford’s costly choice almost makes you forget that you’re watching a commercial for a snack that’s supposed to elicit joy (or at least hunger suppression).

The brand is so committed to the bit this scary season, it’s debuting the short at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival and offering the snack in theater-style boxes in stores to further traumatize consumers.
