For South Park, it has been a strange few months across the five episodes that aired. This is saying something, since the show’s current plotline involves Satan carrying Donald Trump’s butt baby.
On the streaming service Paramount+, South Park’s latest episode, Twisted Christian, has now been categorized as Season 28, Episode 1. Going to the section of the streaming service presents you with the premiere being the start of Season 28.
This comes alongside a great deal of confusion as to why Season 27 quietly ended. If it was intentionally ended, was it a creative choice, a Comedy Central decision, or contract shenanigans? We have yet to find out exactly why, but there are a few theories out there as to why.
South Park Season 28 Premiere, Makes Way for a 30th Anniversary Blowout
One such theory is that the showrunners, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, are testing the boundaries of their new home on Paramount+, which gave them an earth-shattering amount of creative control over the show and how it has been released. That’s why a lot of the episodes have been airing with significant details in between.
Another idea is that the reason for Season 28 airing early is to make way for a 30th anniversary of the show like no other. Season 30, if airing now two years from now in 1997, has the potential to air exactly 30 years after the original episodes aired on August 13, 1997. The potential for a season of South Park celebrating the milestone while also still satirizing current events is incomprehensible to imagine so far away from now. But that doesn’t mean it leaves us incredibly excited to see how the show will continue to evolve and satirically reflect American culture.
