The British singer tied the essence of her album directly with her marital struggles. She pointed out that her marriage to Harbour, “was falling apart, amid reports of alleged infidelity on his part.”
Her new album appears to be a kind of journal of Allen and Harbour’s relationship. “There are things that are on the record that I experience within my marriage, but that’s not to say that it’s all gospel. It is inspired by what went on in that relationship,” she shared.
Highlighting the personal touch to her tunes, Lily referred to tracks on her album that focused on betrayal and heartbreak. In “Sleepwalking”, her lyrics read, “You let me think it was in my head / and nothing to do with them girls in your bed,” On “Dallas Major”, she sings, “You know I used to be quite famous that was back in the day / I probably should explain how my marriage has been open since my husband went astray.” The lyrics very clearly acknowledge the raw vulnerability of her emotions.
However, the “Smile” singer emphasized on distinguishing between art and facts. Meanwhile, Harbour has stayed mostly silent. David shared with GQ in April that, “There’s no use of engaging because it’s all based on hysterical hyperbole.” However, Allen’s music serves as her own form of free expression.
