New shows are arriving, and listeners will bid farewell to Radio Free Current, the station’s all-request show, which will have its final weekly broadcast on Saturday, Oct. 18.

“Please help me send off Radio Free Current with a bang by sending me your request for tonight’s show to help me make it a good one!” host Barb Abney writes on Facebook.

The Current

While Radio Free Current is heading out, Abney is not. She’ll continue to host a slot from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturdays, as well as 9 p.m. to midnight on Sundays.

Other changes will see Radio Heartland leaving The Current, though it will still be available online and Radio Heartland via KNOW-HD2 (91.1FM-HD2 in the Twin Cities).

That’ll be replaced by a longer version of Bill DeVille’s United States of Americana from 7 to 10 a.m. on Sundays.

Here are the other changes coming to the station.

  • Sheroes Radio will be a new program featuring a diverse range of female voices, hosted by Carmel Holt, from 6 to 7 a.m. on Saturdays.

  • DJ Jake Rudh’s Transmission — the popular broadcast of post-punk, new wave, and indie music — will air from 7 to 8 a.m. on Saturdays.

  • Sanni Brown’s The Message will play classic hip-hop from 10 to 11 p.m. on Saturdays, followed by an hour of Carbon Sound, another hip-hop and R&B-focused program.

  • On Sundays, The Local Show will continue to start at 7 p.m., running until Abney takes over from 9 p.m.

  • The Current is also planning to launch a new show spotlighting emerging country singer-songwriters that will air from 6 to 7 a.m. on Sundays. That will make its debut in January.
