The last time we saw “Lope” was when Hope left Carter to be with Liam and Beth (Jordyn Lynn Ariza). It was because of Beth, not because of love, that they reconciled. Liam and Hope realized that they’re better together.
Carter could tell that Hope wanted to be with her family. So, he did her the favor of ending their engagement. He removed the engagement ring from her finger, so she was free to be with Liam.
