Bette Midler has said she was “crying with laughter” when working on First Wives Club with Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn.
In a special tribute following Diane’s death, the 79-year-old actress said she had “so much fun” with her co-stars on the comedy movie, which was released in 1996.
After Diane passed away last week, Bette said she felt “unbearably sad” as she described the star as “brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary.”
During an appearance on the October 16 episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Bette was asked about her favorite memory involving Diane.
She said, “My favorite was, of course, First Wives Club. We had so much fun on that [movie]. I think that was the most fun I ever had because those two girls, between them, I was on the floor every single day. I was crying with laughter.”
Earlier in the week, Bette appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Tuesday and described Diane as “a genius,” saying, “There was something about her that was utterly magical. … She was completely her own person and inimitable. She was so authentically herself.”
She also revealed she initially felt “intimidated” when they met but things quickly changed. “I have a great memory of her with Goldie. … I had never worked or met them before, and we sat down in a cafe … at a round table, and I was so intimidated,” Bette told Stephen.
“I was a little bit of a newbie. So, we sat there, and they started telling stories, and I’ll tell you, I never laughed harder in my whole life. It was brilliant and magical.”
Following Diane’s death, Bette wrote a tribute on Instagram, “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me.
“She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was … oh, la, lala!”
Earlier this week, Diane’s family confirmed she died of pneumonia on October 11 as they expressed their gratitude for fans’ support in an emotional message.
“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” they said in a statement.
Diane’s family went on to share the causes she was passionate about, “She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.”
