MEDFORD — Patty Griffin and Rickie Lee Jones met for the first time a less than a year ago but quickly formed a Mutual Admiration Society.

That was on display Oct. 18 at the 1,900 seat Chevalier Theatre in Medford. Both had won Grammys and both had bought their talent to the legendary Old Vienna Kaffeehaus.

“I am so honored this share the stage with my hero,” Griffin told the nearly-full theater after Jones finished her moving and sometimes hilarious hour-long set.

Jones made several ribald remarks between her finely crafted tunes.

“When I smoked pot all I wanted to do was eat and (expletive),” she said. She also told stories about clams and lobsters.

When she wasn’t telling ribald stories she sang her songs. She is 71 but still can sing with the high voice of a young girl, which she did on “Chuck E. in Love” and “Tree on Allen Ford.” She did several songs from her Grammy winning debut album and closed with”It Must Be Love” and “Last Chance Texaco.”

“Well, for me, I don’t think Rickie Lee knew me from a hole in the wall probably when we met, but I’ve known Rickie Lee’s music since her first record, and I call her my North Star,” Griffin told The Pittsburgh Tribune this week. “Some people have their artists that they suddenly go, oh, wow, and they see the possibilities. And that’s this one for me.”

Patty Griffin and Rickie Lee Jones are playing in Pittsburgh on October 23. The tour, which kicked off Oct. 10 in Mississippi, ends Nov. 1 in Dallas.
