Spike Lee

Spike Lee was just one of the Hollywood celebrities who took part in the No Kings protests, which occurred nationwide in opposition to what organizers call Donald Trump’s ‘crackdowns on First Amendment rights’

Spike Lee had a four-word message for his fans as he took to the streets with thousands in New York City for the No Kings protests, which occurred nationwide on Oct. 18.

The No Kings protests kicked off on Saturday in opposition to what organizers call Donald Trump‘s “crackdowns on First Amendment rights.” The last No Kings protest occurred on June 14, hours before a military parade for the U.S. Army’s 250th Anniversary in Washington D.C.

The newest rallies across the country saw the Hollywood director tell his followers on Instagram, “GET UP STAND UP,” before adding, “YA-DIG? SH-NUFF.” The message was attached to a snap Lee took of his sister, Joie Lee, many fans claimed in the comments section of the post. In the snaps, she was in the streets of the major city holding up a hand-painted poster of Trump on the cover of Time magazine with the words, “Time To Go.”

Fans in the comments section praised Lee and Joie, with one person writing, “That TIME poster! Excellent!!” Another added, “Winning! Fighting for America’s Republic!” A third praised, “Fight the power and never surrender!!!!”

Lee wasn’t the only celebrity who showed up in support of the rallies. Actress Jamie Lee Curtis posted a carousel of snaps to Instagram that show participants protesting. “SIGNS ‘O THE TIMES! Democracy in ACTION!,” she captioned her post.

Actor Ben Stiller re-shared a photo of a participant holding a sign that said, “No Kings except for Knicks player Jalen Brunson.” Meanwhile, Michele Mulroney, president of the Writers Guild of America West, gave a speech at a No Kings Rally in LA on Saturday.

“As writers, our currency is words and stories. The freedom to express ourselves is a fundamental American right and the very core of our democracy. And it’s under attack by this administration. They are using every tool in their arsenal to silence voices of dissent,” she said in her speech.

Mulroney then mentioned the cancelation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel’s brief suspension. She said, “This isn’t just about Hollywood. This is about our fundamental right as human beings to disagree with those in power.

“To debate, to reason, to interrogate ideas. This is one of the foundations of a civil society. As is the existence of a free, independent media. Where facts can be reported without repercussions. But we currently find ourselves in an era of consolidated media where an increasingly small number of gatekeepers control what we get to watch on television.

“We’ve all heard the FCC claim that ‘the public interest is best served by permitting free expression of views,’ yet FCC Chairman Brendan Carr does not hesitate to support attacks on those who challenge the Administration’s narrative.”

“The Writers Guild stands here today, with all of you, to say loudly and proudly that we will speak our minds, write our truths, tell our stories, and fight like hell for free speech and an independent media,” Mulroney said at the end of her speech.

Two days before the protests, actor Mark Ruffalo took to Instagram to share his support. “WE the People — WE have the power and together WE will win! Check out this inspiring video and share it with your family, friends and neighbors to join one of the over 2,500 No Kings protests across our country this Saturday,” he wrote.

“Courage is contagious! Each of us have an important role to play in this historic moment by exercising our First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and peaceful protest.”
