The Resurrection of the Christ appears to be Mel Gibson’s most expensive film to date as a director.
The Resurrection of the Christ is the forthcoming follow-up to 2004’s The Passion of the Christ. That movie, which was directed and co-produced by Gibson, depicts the arrest, trial, and crucifixion of Jesus, played by Jim Caviezel.
What is The Resurrection of the Christ’s budget?
While it was previously known that The Resurrection of the Christ is being split into two different parts, Deadline is now reporting that each film costs around $100 million to make, meaning the two-part project costs approximately $200 million in total.
In comparison, the budgets for the movies Gibson previously directed come in at approximately $37 million for 1993’s The Man Without a Face, $53-72 million for 1995’s Braveheart, $30 million for The Passion of the Christ, $40 million for 2006’s Apocalypto, $40 million for 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge, and $25 million for 2025’s Flight Risk.
“Expectations are for the films to pick up after Christ’s crucifixion, which closed the previous iteration,” Deadline’s article reads. “Christ’s resurrection came three days later, according to the Bible. Don’t expect a straightforward rendition, however. Gibson has spoken before about his vision for the film being ‘an acid trip’ and ‘super ambitious,’ including the fall of the angels and Christ descending into hell as part of his spiritual journey. Sources close to the project have confirmed to us that it will include battles between angels and demons and forces of ‘good and evil’ in other realms, which probably goes some way to explaining the big budget.”
Caviezel will not be returning for The Resurrection of the Christ, as the role of Jesus is instead being played by Jaakko Ohtonen. Monica Bellucci, who played Mary Magdalene, is also not coming back for Resurrection; Mariela Garriga is instead portraying the character. The cast further includes Kasia Smutniak as Mary, Pier Luigi Pasino as Peter, Riccardo Scamarcio as Pontius Pilate, and Rupert Everett in an undisclosed role.
The first part of The Resurrection of the Christ arrives on March 26, 2027, while the second part will be released on May 6, 2027.
