This historic visit was set to take place in April, but was postponed due to the then-Pope Francis’ health decline. Charles and Camilla did privately meet with Pope Francis during a state visit to Italy later that month, just two weeks before the pope died.
Charles has met three popes throughout his 76 years – Pope John Paul II in Canterbury, England, in 1982; Pope Benedict XVI in 2009; Pope Francis in 2017, 2019, and 2025. The latter two popes met Charles in Italy, while Pope John Paul made the historic first-ever visit to the UK by a reigning Pope.
