Meghan Markle opened up about her home life with Prince Harry and their two children.
The Duchess of Sussex, 44, had a speaking engagement at Godmothers Bookstore on Wednesday, October 23, in Summerland, California. She was joined by author and lifestyle creator Courtney Adamo, 44, at the event, titled Compare Notes on Creating a Home That’s Filled With Joy, which was moderated by the bookstore’s co-founder, Victoria Jackson, 70. The intimate discussion also featured Courtney’s new book, The Family Home. Meghan and Courtney are good friends who go back to meeting as freshmen at Northwestern University and becoming sorority sisters. Meghan has been close with Victoria since moving to California in 2020.
The event, which was livestreamed on Substack and Instagram, provided insight into Meghan’s approach to entertaining, motherhood, and home life. Meghan shares Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, with Harry, 41.
For example, Meghan shared how she likes to play music first thing in the morning when she wakes up. She will also bring a portable speaker while traveling with the family to keep the music going, along with a scented candle.
“I always travel with a candle. I am so conscious and sensitive to fragrance, and I associate that with home,” Meghan elaborated.
Meghan shared a ritual that she does with her two children: asking them what their “rose and thorn” is. Rose and thorn is a phrase used to ask a person, respectively, what was the best part of their day and what was the difficult part.
The former actress explained how the ritual is a “great opener” for young children, especially when they’re at the stage where they are only giving “yes” or “no” answers. She added that “you can really peel back the layers and really connect” with that question.
“You know, our daughter she’s four and she’s a very strong personality and she’s incredible,’ Meghan said. “And now she’s in this moment where I say, ‘What’s your rose and your thorn?’ And she goes, ‘My day was just a blast.'”
Body language expert Judi James spoke with The Daily Express U.S. about Meghan’s recent event. Judi stated that Meghan’s glimpses into her home life come “with a very pitch-perfect delivery” that seems to merge a “self-effacing and relatable” presentation of herself with a supposed projection of “idyllic perfection and a desire to teach others from her own experiences.”
Judi also went on to talk about how Meghan is in her environment, public speaking at the event.
“Her pose, smile, and the way she holds her mic aloft in a very determined grip that involves her elbow pushing out, all speak of her more professional love of communicating with audiences. Her friend has a much more reluctant look to her mic grip and pose that suggests a more down-to-earth approach to public speaking, but Meghan is clearly in her element here,” she said.
Judi went on to say Meghan had a “gleeful” smile at the event with her cheek raised and rounded, but her mouth was shaped in a “slightly suppressed smile.” The body language expert said that her eye expressions formed a smile during the moments she reflected and related, which seems to exhibit how “wonderful” her life is and how much she “adores” talking about her life.
She additionally stated that Meghan’s modest giggling and body listing signaled letting “everyone know she is cute and girlish.” Judi also noted that when Meghan reveals something personal, she apparently” crosses her body with her arm and scratches her neck in an introductory announcement gesture.”
Judi highlighted the moment Meghan talked about asking her daughter about her rose and thorn.
“When she refers to ‘Our daughter’ there is a similar pausing gesture to act as an announcement of personal data. This time she touches her nose in a smaller cut-off ritual. This suggests there is another personal ‘reveal’ coming up with an acknowledgement that these are very special children she is revealing about. It also suggests a moment of being overwhelmed by emotion for her ‘incredible’ daughter,” she said.
Judi stated that this is Meghan’s “signature look” and that she typically does it with “eyelid flutter” whenever she speaks about her husband or children. She claimed that Meghan does that look when conveying that she is “full up on love.”
