Netflix has shared a new trailer for one of its most ambitious Japanese originals, Last Samurai Standing, ahead of its global debut. The trailer teases a high-stakes story set in a time of shifting loyalties and survival. It offers a glimpse into Netflix’s next large-scale historical drama.

Last Samurai Standing gets new trailer ahead of release date

A new trailer for Last Samurai Standing, Netflix’s upcoming Japanese action series premiering worldwide on November 13, 2025, has been released.

Set in Japan’s Meiji era, the story follows 292 former samurai who gather at Kyoto’s Tenryu-ji Temple for a deadly survival contest. The winner must steal others’ wooden tags and reach Tokyo to claim a ¥100 billion prize. The series centers on Shujiro Saga, portrayed by Junichi Okada.

Adapted from Shogo Imamura’s novel Ikusagami, the six-episode series marks Netflix Japan’s one of the most ambitious historical projects to date. Okada, who stars, produces, and serves as action choreographer, described the challenge of balancing his creative roles to Variety, stating, “As an actor, you should be selfish. As a producer, you think about budgets and logistics… but when I read this script, I knew right away: this is the one.”

Directed by Michihito Fujii, Last Samurai Standing reunites him with Okada after their 2023 film Hard Days. Fujii said the production aimed to blend historical authenticity with cinematic intensity: “We believed that by infusing the story and action with the spirit and aesthetics unique to us as Japanese, we could resonate with viewers around the world.”

The cast features Riho Yoshioka, Hideaki Itō, and Kazunari Ninomiya. The first two episodes premiered at the 30th Busan International Film Festival in September 2025 before the show’s global Netflix debut.

The trailer showcases large-scale sword battles filmed without digital enhancement, emphasizing the series’ focus on realism. Netflix described it as “an epic battle royale between brave warriors who lived through an uncertain era” in the description of the trailer.
