KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WIBW) – The Kansas City Royals made history on Oct. 27, 1985, by crushing the St. Louis Cardinals, 11-0, in Game 7 of the World Series.
On this day 40 years ago, the Royals capped off the I-70 series with an 11-run rout over the Cardinals for their first-ever World Series title. At one point of the series, Kansas City was down 3-1 after St. Louis took wins in games 1, 2 and 4.
Despite Kansas City finding itself in a highly unlikely position to win the series, they took games 5, 6 and 7 to become World Series champions.
The 1985 American League Cy Young Award winner Bret Saberhagen was crowned the World Series MVP after pitching a nearly perfect postseason. Saberhagen pitched a five-hit, no-walk shutout performance in Game 7 to help Kansas City secure its first title.
