In a clash between the two teams that faced off in the 2014 World Series, the Giants took on the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.

Unfortunately for San Francisco, which lost Monday’s game 4-3, the result was the same as its past three. The Giants lost 3-2 after squandering another lead, falling to 42-59 on the year.
They were able to string together a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI single by Drew Gilbert and an errant throw from Royals shortstop Tyler Tolbert, allowing another run on a routine ground ball by Heliot Ramos.
But a productive sixth inning for the Royals ultimately was the deciding factor after an unfortunate sequence that manager Tony Vitello referred to as the “difference” when speaking to the media after the loss.

“At the end of the day, the (sixth) inning was the difference maker,” Vitello said. “But for us to get out of there with two runs, with how everything transpired, was pretty good.”
In the scorebook, the loss falls squarely on the shoulders of starting pitcher Tyler Mahle, who falls to 2-9 on the year. However, Mahle was having a steady outing after giving up a third-inning home run. He was able to keep the Royals off the board for the next couple of innings before things unraveled for him in the dreaded sixth.
Vinnie Pasquantino singled to tie the game, and then Nick Loftin gave the Royals the lead with a go-ahead RBI single of his own.
Mahle’s night ended with him having pitched five innings, allowing five hits and striking out four but allowing three earned runs.

The loss officially drops the Giants to 11-49 on the year when they score three runs or fewer. The rubber match between the two teams is set for Wednesday at 11:10 a.m. and will see Landen Roupp (7-8) face off against Seth Lugo (3-6).
