Marcie Free, the lead singer for bands such as King Kobra, Signal and Unruly Child, has died.
She was 71.
Blabbermouth.net reported Free’s death and cited a social media post from Unruly Child drummer Jay Schellen.
“I just couldn’t find the words last night when I heard the news that my loving friend and bandmate in Unruly Child mrcie Free has passed,” Schellen wrote on Facebook. “This is heartbreaking.
“Bruce (Gowdy, guitar), Guy (Allison, keyboards), Larry (Antonino, bass) all of which I hold dear as family are shattered for the loss of our Marcie. We began UC together in 1992 and continued our friendship and music making through these years to this day.”
Schellen called Free “a marvel to behold.”
“A voice that had no limits and no equal,” he wrote. “A truly singular talent and one of the most open and beautiful souls I have ever known.
“I’m gutted and can’t say much more.”
Schellen addressed the rest of the band and told them he loved them.
“Love to you too Marcie,” he wrote. “You always were an Angel, now you have your wings.”
Free, previously known as Mark Free, came out as a trans woman in 1993.
Blabbermouth reported that she contributed vocals to two King Kobra albums before leaving the band in 1986. The outlet said Free released two albums with Signal and also had a pair of solo albums.
