Gold Derby has earned its first-ever nominations — eight in all — for the National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards, which are handed out by the L.A. Press Club. Gold Derby was nominated for Best Entertainment Website, which reflects the work of our entire editorial team. The winners will be announced at the press club’s awards gala on Dec. 7.

Gold Derby earned a nomination for Entertainment Publication for our Emmy special edition, titled Severance Reverence, which was published in May, and again featured the work of our full editorial staff.

Film Feature, Actors
Deputy editor Ethan Alter earned a nomination for film feature for his interview with Apollo 13 star Kathleen Quinlan titled, “‘What balls!’ Apollo 13 star Kathleen Quinlan on firing off notes to Ron Howard, secret dinner with Tom Hanks, and why her Oscar-nominated role was more than just ‘the wife.’”

Gold Derby contributor David Buchanan was recognized for his oral history of the play Purpose, titled: “‘Every beat is meticulously crafted’: An oral history of the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony-winning play Purpose”

Music Feature, Individual Artists
Contributor Lyndsey Parker earned a nomination for her interview with Sean Ono Lennon, titled “Sean Ono Lennon on his Mind Games Grammy nomination and stewarding his family’s legacy: ‘I’m trying to do good by my own father’.”

Music Feature, Group/Industry Artists
Parker was also nominated for her retrospective on the band Simple Minds, titled: “40 years later, Simple Minds still don’t regret turning down Breakfast Club song publishing: ‘Just look what we got out of it’”

Editor-in-chief Debra Birnbaum was recognized for her headline for her story about a New York Times crossword entry about The Bear: “The drama over 38 Down: The New York Times crossword declares The Bear a ‘TV drama’”
