According to Deadline, IT: Welcome to Derry Episode 2 will release early to coincide with Halloween. This is three days ahead of its normal release schedule and will likely lead to inflated viewership. The first episode was somewhat well-received, and it’s more than likely that the second will receive a similar reception. The show is spearheaded by the same people responsible for the films, so it will likely have much of the same feel. Yet, since they are not bound by an existing source material, they can take severe liberties with their new show.
Episode 2 is set to debut on Halloween night and then will be available again on its premiere date of November 2nd. So far, the episode has received somewhat mixed reviews. The child acting is largely cited as one of the biggest problems of the show, but the episode largely nails the other horror elements. Although there are a few scenes that could be considered unnecessary, that is just the style that the franchise adheres to. While many fans are holding out hope for the 2nd episode, it remains to be seen if the first episode of the prequel was enough to grab fans’ attention.
At this point, many consumers are getting outright tired of spin-offs. It truly seems like every franchise or popular movie is getting a television series that is in some way connected to an overly complicated and unnecessary timeline. While this practice first began with superhero movies, it has clearly transitioned to other genres. Hopefully, the remaining episodes will prove why the show is a necessary and entertaining addition to the IT mythos.
Overall, the idea to air an episode three days early to coincide with Halloween is an extremely creative decision on the showrunners’ part. More studios should take note of how being flexible with an airdate can actually help a television show. That said, if the second episode isn’t enough to capture fans’ attention, this show could be over before it truly has a chance to begin.
