New Music Friday: 30 Hip-Hop, R&B Releases You Need On Your Playlist

As anyone who witnessed his blazing Primer. set at 605 Morningside last Saturday can confirm, when Alphabethead hits the stage you will be amazed and compelled to dance. The sonic alter ego of Whanganui-based producer and bona fide champion turntablist (he won the won the 2002 New Zealand DMC DJ Championship at age 18) David Morrison — also of Bad Taste and The All Seeing Hand — Alphabethead’s new album My Name Is David is what happens when virtuosic skills synergise with boundless imagination and a seemingly bottomless well of energy, transforming thought into reality warping action.

Out today via Sunreturn, sporting a generous fourteen tracks (many if not all befitting the Halloween season) and adorned with a vivid cover design by the artist himself, we’ll be featuring an in-depth look at the personally crafted, synthesized universe of My Name Is David on this here site in the coming days. In the meantime, crank it up (preferably on speakers with hefty low end), read Alphabethead’s own words talking about his latest evolution in sound below, grip the official cassette and / or tee HERE, and definitely lock in your spot for this summer’s release tour with compadres DISPLEASURE and BIRDPARTY…

“My previous work has always centred around vinyl sampling and turntable scratching. I was striving for a new process for creation to force myself out of my comfort zone and disrupt my usual songwriting process. This new way became sound design and synthesis and I threw myself into it with gusto! I imposed a rule that I had to fabricate the sounds myself for this project. The music on My Name Is David is mostly synthesized with the turntablism and vinyl sampling elements only adding dusty little embellishments.

Within the track listing itself my intent was to represent a full range of moods from the optimistic and ecstatic to the pessimistic and rippling with despair. I constantly find myself oscillating between these states depending on where I am reading my news. Although few and far between there are a couple passages where my goal was to freeze time and create a more contemplative, tranquil moment.

There’s always a little lump in my throat when I have to finally write ‘The End, Farewell Folks’ on a project. But, I’m excited for it to reach people’s ears and brimming with anticipation to hear if the music tickles the audience! It has been a time intensive album due to all the experimentation and new methods but a very rewarding one.”
