During a sit-down interview with Hasan Minhaj, Prince Harry gave a rare glimpse into how he and Meghan Markle navigate parenting.
The Duke of Sussex was speaking with the comedian and actor to talk about ‘how he’s settling into life in America, the danger of repeating the same mistakes with A.I. that we made with social media, and what a guy has to do around here to get knighted,’ as described by Hasan.
When discussing how social media affects children and young adults, Hasan asked the Prince, “I don’t know if you guys have hit this crossroads yet, but what are you gonna do when your kids ask for a cellphone? Are you gonna give them a phone? I mean, have you talked to Meghan about this? Because I’ve talked to my wife about this.”
“Yeah, we talk about it a lot,” Harry responded, “And I think, because of what we know now, we will be way more cautious and hesitant about allowing our kids to have access to social media. But the problem is, so many parents don’t have that awareness.”
He continued, “In no logical, fair, ethical, moral world should a parent have to consider that this app, that sits on the phone–which by the way, having a phone for your kid is a really important thing.”
Some viewers reacted to his comments in the reply section, with one sharing a related personal experience. “When we gave our 15 year old daughter a mobile phone, “for emergency messages only”, she spent the hours of 2am, 3am, under the bed blankets , messaging her friends . Teachers noted that a knot of girls seemed very tired and assumed they were studying hard,” she said.
One more wrote bluntly, “You don’t give them a smartphone. What’s so difficult about this? Be an Adult.”
Harry and Meghan share two children, Prince Archie,6, and Princess Lilibet, 4. The family of four resides in Montecito, California, after their exit from the Royal family.
