The actor, 42, known for his roles in Now You See Me and The Social Network, said he is going through with surgery later this year, describing the decision as a “no-brainer”
Jesse Eisenberg, the 42-year-old actor known for his roles in Now You See Me and The Social Network, has announced that he will be donating a kidney to a stranger.
During an appearance on NBC’s Today show, Eisenberg revealed that he was inspired to make this decision after participating in a blood drive organized by the program earlier in the year.
He said, “I just have so much blood in me, and I feel like I should spill it.
“I really like doing it, and I don’t know why.”
Eisenberg also shared: “I’m actually donating my kidney in six weeks. I really am.”

To which host Craig Melvin responded: “That’s amazing.”
Eisenberg continued: “I got, like, bitten by the blood donation bug. I love it.”
When Melvin commented that the decision marked “a big jump up”, Eisenberg replied: “I’m doing an altruistic donation (in) mid-December.”
According to Weill Cornell Medicine, an altruistic donation – also known as a non-directed living donation – is when someone donates an organ to a stranger, with the recipient selected based on medical compatibility.
In a separate interview with Today.com, Eisenberg said: “It’s essentially risk-free and so needed. I think people will realize that it’s a no-brainer if you have the time and the inclination.”
Jesse, who has an eight-year-old son named Banner, explained that under the National Kidney Foundation’s family voucher program, his relatives would get priority if they ever needed a kidney transplant down the line.
He said: “The way it works now is you can put a list of whoever you would like to be the first to be at the top of the list. So it’s risk-free for my family, as well.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, most kidney donors are able to return to their regular routines within two to four weeks following the procedure. The National Kidney Foundation reports that approximately 5,000 living kidney donations occur annually in the United States.
Recognized for his intense and frequently anxious on-screen performances, Jesse received an Academy Award nomination for The Social Network and appeared in Zombieland, Now You See Me and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
He has also penned theatrical works and helmed indie movies.
