Jane Seymour, Henry VIII’s third wife, became pregnant shortly after her marriage in 1536. On October 12, 1537, she gave birth to a son at Hampton Court Palace—the long-awaited male heir that Henry had desperately wanted. The boy, christened Edward, represented the continuation of the Tudor dynasty and was celebrated throughout the kingdom. However, Jane’s triumph was brief and tragic. She developed puerperal fever, a postpartum infection that was often fatal in the sixteenth century, and died on October 24, just twelve days after delivering her son.
Edward VI ascended to the throne as a nine-year-old boy, his father having died in January 1547. Since the young king was far too young to rule independently, a regency council was established to govern in his stead. His uncle, Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset, initially dominated the council as Lord Protector. During Edward’s reign, England underwent significant religious transformation. The boy-king and his advisors pursued aggressively Protestant reforms, introducing the Book of Common Prayer and dismantling much of the Catholic ceremonial that had persisted under Henry VIII’s reign.
Edward’s early years were marked by relative stability, but his reign became increasingly turbulent as factional rivalries erupted within the court. Despite his intelligence and education, Edward VI remained a pawn in the hands of powerful nobles competing for influence. He died in 1553 at just fifteen years old, likely from tuberculosis, bringing an end to the direct male line of the Tudors and leaving the succession deeply contested.
