Singer Mýa said hearing her “younger voice” is cringey. The Grammy winner is marking the 25th anniversary of her breakthrough album “Fear of Flying,” and revisiting those early recordings stirs memories of a career that demanded a lot from a very young artist. “I don’t really listen to a lot of the old music because I like my voice now,” she told People. “It’s very cringey to me because I sound like a kid.”
Still, the emotion runs deeper than embarrassment. “I get very emotional when I hear my younger voice because of all that was endured,” Mýa said, reflecting on the pressure and growth that have shaped her. She remembers starting “fresh out of high school,” thrust into an industry watching her every move, and she’s now calling the moment she’s in, her “grown woman era.”
“I am so enamored by the journey because sometimes it takes 25, 27, 30 years to come into who you’re going to be for the rest of your life — and that’s where I am now,” Mýa said.
That reflection fuels her new music. Her latest single, “Face to Face,” is described as a meditation on self-love, spiritual growth, and healing.
“‘Face to Face’ is a very, very high vibrational record,” Mýa added. “It’s all about self-reflection, introspection, healing, but also reassurance. It’s a spiritual song, even though it has a bit of swag. I call it my spiritual flex song.” She said the video intentionally shows different versions of herself to invite fans into that process of becoming.
“The world has yet to receive the best of Mýa,” she said. After 25 years, she’s not looking back to stay there.
