After last night’s 20-run explosion, tonight was naturally a pitcher’s duel. The only runs that scored were solo home runs. Fortunately, the Royals hit two of them off of starter Shane Bieber.
That’s 23 for Bobby Witt Jr. and 31 for Vinnie Pasquantino. Unfortunately, Salvador Perez couldn’t come through with any RBIs tonight in his last-second push for 100 RBIs.
Just to prove the Royals are who they are, they loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Unfortunately, Tyler Tolbert struck out looking on an absolutely filthy sweeper, and Carter Jensen roped a line drive to left that forced Myles Straw to make a fantastic running, no-look, over-the-shoulder catch.
Noah Cameron was fantastic for the third straight start. Each of the last two saw him go seven innings with two runs allowed. Tonight, he went 6.2 but allowed only one run. He struck out five, walked two, and allowed only three hits, including the solo home run to Daulton Varsho that was the only blemish on his record.
The Royals have staved off elimination for one more night. As of this writing, the Red Sox just took the lead over the Rays in the ninth for the second night in a row, and the Mariners are whalloping the Astros. If those results hold, the Royals’ elimination number will remain at two headed into the home finale tomorrow afternoon. They will attempt to earn a sweep at 1:10 p.m. Kansas City time. The game will feature rookie Trey Yesavage versus veteran Michael Wacha.
