Meghan Markle has got on the wrong side of fans once again, but this time it’s for a video of her celebrating the Los Angeles Dodgers’ World Series win on Saturday.
Taking to Instagram, the former actress, 44, shared a black-and-white video of her cheering the team on, showing her shrieking in delight, then running over to her husband, Prince Harry, 41, who was sitting on a reclining chair with his feet up.
After bending down to give him a hug and a kiss, she jumped up and down with her close friend, Kelly McKee Zajfen, in excitement. “Oh my God,” the mother-of-two exclaimed, as Harry giggled at her.
Despite the lighthearted theme of the video, some fans were not amused and took to social media to vent their fury.
“This is irritating to see. Fake AF,” one user declared on X, as a second said, “Of course it was NOT staged because, you know, the camera was perfectly positioned to capture everyone. Oh my gosh! Look how happy we are and so into each other. See, we have a friend and it’s not my bottle of wine.”
“This is peak level cringe,” a third blasted, as someone else moaned, “Imagine a former Royal Prince Harry has been reduced to being an unpaid ‘extra’ in his wife’s deluded fantasy world.”
And it turns out fans’ suspicions of Meghan staging her celebration may not just be trolls being trolls after all, as body language expert Judi James seems to agree.
Speaking exclusively to Express US, Judi began, “It’s easy to see why this video might be accused of looking staged, although most people faking it might have preferred to be seen in some kind of happy family celebratory pile-on rather than this grainy film-noir-looking ritual that appears oddly cold (from Harry) and lacking in signals of totally united fun and good humor.”
She went on, “Firstly, the fact they’re being filmed at all makes this performative. ‘Let’s see how cool we look when we’re celebrating’ is an odd brief.
“The presence of the perfectly positioned camera would tend to take a lot of any genuine spontaneity out of the frame for most people, especially as this will be used to showcase some aspect of their lives on social media, as they want to be seen.”
Judi continued, “The grainy monochrome might presumably also have taken some form of override with the camera, as most modern cameras will create pin-sharp colour videos pretty much whatever the light, unless this was shot on a night vision camera, which brings a whole new layer to the video.
“This looks more like the celebrity trend for taking photos and videos or shooting TV and working hard to make the result look deliberately amateurish to give the impression of naturalness.”
The expert then referenced Prince Harry‘s role in the post, saying, “Then there’s the setting. Who lies reclined for the last moments of a nail-biting sporting final? If you’re a fan, it’s usually an edge-of-the-seat response as you prepare yourself for a celebratory body language explosion.
Instead, Judi noticed, “Harry lies back and disassociates from the action here, which could be a loser’s sulk, although he does seem to take it too far considering they have a guest. Or is he less of a fan of the ‘hidden’ reality camera in his own home?”
She then asked, “And where does Meghan enter from? Was she off to fill the crisp bowl during the win? Or was she setting the camera up to record herself creeping and leaping?”
“She enters on tiptoe from stage left with her back arched and her arms outstretched to go and hug Harry’s head while he churlishly virtually ignores her with his eyes still on the screen. What happened to: I’m happy for you, darling?” Judi added. “There’s a central celebratory dance ritual from her that lures her friend to stand and jump and hug obligingly with lots of shrieking.”
Judi noted, “Harry’s wry smile looks annoyingly trad-macho here and there’s a hint that Meghan might actually have been waiting to film his reaction if his team had won.”
Before concluding, “But his reluctance to join in with anything other than this wry smile suggests he’s not generous enough to join his wife in her winning dance apart from throwing a weak smile in her direction.”
