Cheney died Monday night due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, according to a statement from his family shared with the press.
The Nebraska-born politician served as the White House chief of staff for president Gerald Ford in the ’70s, before spending a decade in the House of Representatives. He is best known as George W. Bush’s vice president from 2001 to 2009, and as a key architect of the invasion of Iraq in 2003 after 9/11. In recent years, Cheney was a vocal critic of current U.S. President Donald Trump.
Cheney was portrayed by British actor Christian Bale in the 2018 biopic Vice, which landed both Bale and co-star Sam Rockwell Academy Award nominations, as well as a best picture nod, in 2019.
