However, after Matt Smith’s recent comments about his Star Wars future, many of the people who love the tales from a galaxy far, far away had a very good reason to be shocked.
Matt Smith Revealed He Is Starting To Film His ‘Star Wars’ Role Months Later Than Expected
In November 2025, the YouTube channel for A Rabbit’s Foot published a video of their lengthy conversations with Matt Smith. During the interview, Smith briefly spoke about his previously announced role in the upcoming movie Star Wars: Starfighter, which is currently slated for a 2027 release. After he spoke about the clothes he will wear in the upcoming project, the important thing is that Smith stated he will start filming for Star Wars: Starfighter in December.
“I’m going through this process now for the job I’m about to do.” Smith said. “We’re going through the process of trying to find a costume, and sometimes you don’t know if you love a costume until you’ve worn it for a couple of days. I’m about to do Star Wars in December, and we’re sort of trying to develop the look for that.
Until fans learned about that comment from Smith, it had seemed like it would have been safe to assume that he’d begun filming Star Wars: Starfighter months earlier than his newly confirmed start date. The reason for that is an August 2025 article from The Hollywood Reporter revealed that filming for Star Wars: Starfighter was beginning at that time.
Why Matt Smith Starting To Film for ‘Star Wars’ in December Is Such a Shocking and Meaningful Revelation

In August 2025, an article from The Hollywood Reporter stated that Matt Smith will be portraying a villain in Star Wars: Starfighter. As a result of reporting like that, many observers assumed that Smith had been cast as one of the main villains in the Shawn Levy-directed film that also stars Ryan Gosling, Mia Goth, and Amy Adams. After learning about Smith’s filming start date, however, that assumption definitely seems to be in question.
While it is still possible that Smith could portray one of the film’s main villains and he started filming months later than the rest of the cast, there is a simple reason to question if that is the case. The most important villains in many modern Star Wars films spend a lot of time onscreen. Considering that and the fact that Smith won’t start filming until December, that naturally leads to conjecture that his role could be of lesser importance than some fans had previously assumed.
Fortunately, if Smith’s role is less important than it initially seemed, there is another actor who could perfectly portray the film’s fearsome foe. In June 2025, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Mia Goth had been cast in Star Wars: Starfighter as a villain. Given Goth’s stunning performances in the X horror trilogy, which is made up of X (2022), Pearl (2022), and MaXXXine (2024), there is no doubt about how scary she can be.
Ultimately, there is no way for fans to know now if Smith, Goth, or a combination of them both will be Star Wars: Starfighter’s main villain. What is clear after Smith’s recent revelation, however, is that fans shouldn’t make assumptions about either actor’s roles. Well, it still seems safe to assume that the movie will have a great villain since Goth and Smith seem like they were both born to portray a Star Wars antagonist.
