Kelsey Grammer is embracing life as a dad of eight — and he couldn’t be happier about it.
In an interview with People shared Wednesday, November 5, the Frasier star opened up about welcoming his youngest child, Christopher, earlier this year with wife Kayte Walsh. The 70-year-old actor called life with a newborn “awesome and fantastic,” adding that “the family’s ecstatic. We’re all really having a great time. It’s really lovely.”
The actor first announced Christopher’s arrival on the Pod Meets World podcast in late October, calling him his “new baby.” Reflecting on this new chapter, Grammer said, “We are closer than we’ve ever been as a family, and I’m proud of that.”
Christopher joins siblings Faith, 12, Gabriel, 10, and James, 8, as well as Grammer’s older children Spencer, 41, Greer, 33, Mason, 23, and Jude, 20, from previous relationships.
Grammer also opened up about one of the most painful chapters of his life — the death of his sister, Karen, in that same episode. The actor became emotional while discussing his memoir, Karen: A Brother Remembers, which reflects on her life and the lasting impact of her loss. Karen was just 18 years old when she was kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and murdered in 1975 by Freddie Glenn and two accomplices — a tragedy that has shaped Grammer’s perspective for nearly five decades.
The men were convicted a year later, and though initially sentenced to death, their punishment was later reduced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Reflecting on that decision, Grammer said in the interview, “I was sort of on the periphery of that decision, but I thought to myself: ‘Well, that’s weird.’” He explained that the change came after the Colorado Supreme Court issued a “blanket commutation of all death sentences” at the time, noting that “life without the possibility of parole did not exist” as an option then.
