Zohran Mamdani made history when he won the New York City mayoral election on Tuesday, and it appears that being someone who will live on in history books runs in his blood, as his mother, director Mira Nair, has also been a trailblazer.
Mamdani cruised to a historic victory over former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an Independent, and Curtis Sliwa, becoming the second-youngest mayor in the city’s history, and the first Muslim to be elected to the post.
His win has sparked mixed reactions, with celebrations from his supporters, but tearful warnings from those who oppose him, including Sliwa, who delivered a message to Mamdani during his concession speech.
The 34-year-old will officially take office on Jan. 1, 2026, and his 68-year-old mother is sure to be in attendance at his inauguration.
However, as proud as she may be of her son, she is also someone who has carved out an impressive path and made a name for herself as an independent filmmaker.
Nair has worked in the industry for decades and is known for making films with modest budgets that go on to massive worldwide success and receive major acclaim. Over the years, she has earned two Academy Award nominations, two BAFTA Award nominations, and two Cesar Award nominations.
According to her IMDb page, she has also won two Cannes Film Festival prizes, as well as four Venice Film Festival prizes as well for various projects.
Her breakthrough in Hollywood came with 1991’s Mississippi Masala, starring Denzel Washington and Sarita Choudhury. Research for that film led her to eventually meet her husband, and the new NYC mayor-elect’s father, political scientist Mahmood Mamdani.
Her biggest commercial success was the 2001 film Monson Wedding, leading her to become the first woman to win the Venice film Festival’s Golden Lion award. Other notable projects also included 2004’s Vanity Fair, starring Reese Witherspoon, 2006’s The Namesake, and Disney’s 2016 film Queen of Katwe, starring Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo.

Nair also famously turned down one large title in order to focus on making more artistic films–choosing The Namesake over Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the fourth film in the blockbuster franchise, which was eventually directed by Mike Newell.
She shared during the 2018 Jaipur Literature Festival that her then-14-year-old son had helped her make the decision at the time.
“I also turned down Harry Potter,” she said.
“They saw Vanity Fair, and they saw how vibrant and whatever voluptuous and successful for them, this was Warner Bros., and they thought, well, they’d had a big success with Alfonso Cuaron from Mexico making Harry Potter 3 so why not get the third-world rainbow coalition making Harry Potter 4.”
