Sydney Sweeney’s new movie, Christy, didn’t get the reception the studio hoped for — and flopped during its premiere weekend at the box office.
The film had a 67% on Rotten Tomatoes as of Monday, November 10, and according to Box Office Mojo, was listed among the 12 worst wide-release films ever shown on over 2,000 screens.
The Wrap reported that Christy opened in 2,011 theaters and averaged approximately $649 at each venue. Of the few films that ranked worse, three came out in the 14 months following the March 2020 COVID-19 outbreak, when theaters were still reeling from pandemic shutdowns and safety mandates.
Sweeney, 28, stars as the titular character Christy Martin, and follows the story of Martin, 57, who was raised in a small town in West Virginia and went on to become a world famous boxer.
However, the film’s premiere came just months after the Euphoria star found herself at the center of backlash due to her appearance in an American Eagle ad that some critics felt carried undertones reminiscent of eugenics.

The tagline in the ad — “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans” — set off a firestorm of controversy with many slamming the actress for her participation.
“Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color… my genes are blue,” Sweeney said in the ad.
The Anyone But You star recently addressed the backlash and seemingly shrugged off the criticism.
“I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans,” Sweeney said in an interview with GQ published on November 4. “All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.”
