Ruby Rose Speaks On 'Draining' Living Conditions In America And What She Loves About Being Back In Australia

Ruby Rose has slammed Sydney Sweeney for “ruining” the biopic “Christy.”

She branded the “Euphoria” star’s casting as inauthentic and accused her of hypocrisy after the film’s poor box-office debut.

Despite the backlash, Christy Martin has shown support for Sydney Sweeney, praising her portrayal in the critically acclaimed biopic.

Rose went scorched earth on Sweeney over her portrayal of legendary boxer and domestic abuse survivor Christy Martin in the new biopic “Christy.”

The “Orange Is the New Black” actress, 39, took to Threads on Monday night to unleash a blistering tirade, accusing the “Euphoria” star of hypocrisy and claiming the project had been “ruined” by Sweeney’s involvement. Rose alleged that the project had once been a deeply authentic, queer-led production before being reworked with Sweeney in the lead role.

“The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life-changing. I was attached to play Cherry. Everyone had experience with the core material,” she wrote. “Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.”

She went on to condemn Sweeney’s casting and the film’s subsequent poor reception, adding: “For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the ‘people.’ None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin, and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”

Rose’s outburst came after the film’s disappointing box-office debut, which saw one of the weakest openings for a wide release this year.

Her remarks also reignited discussions about Hollywood’s ongoing debates over representation and casting queer roles.

Despite her claims, Christy herself has publicly supported Sweeney, attending several promotional events alongside her and praising her commitment to portraying her story authentically.

“Christy” chronicles Christy’s remarkable journey from a small-town fighter to one of America’s most celebrated female boxers, boasting 49 professional wins.

The film also explores the darker chapters of her life, her abusive marriage to her trainer turned husband, Jim Martin, who was later convicted of attempted murder after attacking her in 2010, and her eventual self-acceptance as a gay woman.

After surviving the assault, Christy went on to marry fellow boxer Lisa Holewyne in 2017 and became a vocal advocate for survivors of domestic violence.

Sydney Sweeney Speaks Out About The ‘Christy’ Box Office Performance

Just hours before Rose’s tirade, Sweeney had taken to Instagram to share an emotional message defending “Christy” following its disappointing box-office performance.

In a heartfelt post, the 28-year-old actress expressed deep pride in the film and its message, emphasizing that its value went far beyond ticket sales.

Sweeney wrote that she felt immense pride in the movie, in director David’s vision, and in the story they brought to life. She called it one of the “greatest honors” of her career to portray someone “as strong and resilient as Christy Martin.”

She went on to explain that “Christy” represents themes of “survival, courage, and hope,” and that the team behind it had aimed to raise awareness for those affected by domestic violence.

According to Sweeney, everyone involved in the biopic “all signed on to this film with the belief that Christy’s story could save lives.”

She ended her post by thanking those who supported the film, saying that “If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded.”

Sweeney added that not all art is made for box-office success; some is meant to make an impact, and for her, “Christy” was the most meaningful and transformative project she has ever worked on.

Sydney Sweeney Faces Renewed Backlash Over Political Views And Controversial ‘Great Jeans’ Ad

The controversy surrounding “Christy” has also reignited public debate over Sweeney’s political affiliations. The actress, who is a registered Republican, has faced recurring criticism from liberal audiences, scrutiny that intensified after her recent projects and past family controversies.

Much of the backlash traces back to an American Eagle campaign that featured the “White Lotus” actress in a play on words about “great jeans.” In the ad, the blonde-haired, blue-eyed actress explains how “genes are passed down from parents to offspring, influencing traits like hair and eye color,” before quipping, “My jeans are blue.” The brand then closed with the tagline, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”

What was intended as a cheeky pun quickly turned into a social media storm, with some progressive commentators accusing the ad of echoing eugenicist undertones and labeling it “Nazi propaganda.”

This controversy followed earlier incidents, including backlash over photos from her mother’s 60th birthday party in 2022, where guests wore “Make Sixty Great Again” hats and “Blue Lives Matter” shirts.
