Sabrina Carpenter addressed one of her most ambitious creative ventures ahead of her next major film collaboration. The singer and actress will lead and produce a new musical project inspired by a 19th-century literary classic, marking her latest partnership with Universal Pictures.

Sabrina Carpenter addressed her next big-screen role following her recent Grammy nominations. The singer and actress will star in and produce a new musical adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s 1865 novel Alice in Wonderland for Universal Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Lorene Scafaria, known for directing the 2019 Jennifer Lopez-led film Hustlers, will write and direct the movie. The production team includes Wicked producer Marc Platt, Leslie Morgenstein, and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton of Alloy Entertainment, the company behind Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars. Universal’s senior vice president of production development Ryan Jones and director of production Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project. Katie McNicol will manage it for Marc Platt Productions.
Sources say the project began as a passion idea from Carpenter, who first approached Universal in 2024 with a concept and lookbook. As the idea evolved, producers and Scafaria joined the production. The film is based on Carroll’s Victorian-era tale of a young girl who falls into a fantastical world. Disney adapted it in 1951, and Tim Burton reimagined it in 2010.
The announcement follows Carpenter’s six nominations for the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, including album of the year and record of the year for her album Man’s Best Friend. She also earned acting recognition for roles in The Hate U Give, Emergency, and Girl Meets World.
Scafaria’s credits include directing episodes of HBO’s Succession and I Love L.A., and writing Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. She was nominated for best director at the Independent Spirit Awards for Hustlers. Universal has not yet announced the cast or release timeline for the musical.
