Naruto ended in 2014, and the fate of the franchise fell into the hands of the protagonist’s son, Boruto. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is the sequel series, but it hasn’t nearly generated as much popularity as the original, with only 10 million copies sold since 2016. In recent years, new manga series have begun surpassing it, namely Dandadan, with 12 million copies sold.
It doesn’t sit well with Naruto fans, who must have followed the series since 1999 or the 2000s, that the legacy isn’t being upheld. Dandadan overtaking it has sparked concern for the future of Naruto, considering even Boruto: Two Blue Vortex isn’t contributing a ton to its popularity.
