Ruby Rose has publicly slammed Sydney Sweeney, calling her a “cr***n” and holding her responsible for the box office failure of Christy. The recently released boxing biopic has struggled to make an impact in terms of ticket sales despite Sweeney playing the leading role as boxing icon Christy Martin.
Ruby Rose calls out Sydney Sweeney over Christy’s box office
On Threads, Ruby Rose unexpectedly called out Sydney Sweeney. Rose claimed she was originally attached to play Martin, whom she referred to as “Cherry,” then went on to express deep disappointment with the project’s direction.
“The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry,” Rose wrote. She emphasized the original team’s connection to the material, stating, “Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.”
Then, she specifically aimed at Sweeney’s public response to the film’s poor box office performance. Ruby Rose wrote, “For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS [Sydney Sweeney] did it for the ‘people’. None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cr***n, and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”
Furthermore, when followers pointed out “cr***n” is an ableist term, Rose wrote, “I regret writing that and should have just said psychopath.”
The post appeared to be a direct response to Sweeney’s Monday Instagram post addressing the film’s disappointing box office run. Christy, directed by David Michôd, reportedly earned just $1.3 million domestically in its opening weekend.
Sweeney defended the film’s performance. She wrote on Instagram, “If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded… we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact.”
