As the saying goes, people do crazy things when they’re in love. Take, for example, when Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie wore vials of each other’s blood. Well, sort of. The celebrities were married to each other for two years in the early 2000s. They often made headlines for their unconventional romantic gestures, including wearing lockets containing each other’s blood for a duration of their marriage. Some people put a photo in their wallet, but to each their own.
Now, in a new profile with the Landman star, Thornton reveals to Esquire that the whole blood vials story was blown way out of proportion.
“It was Angie’s idea,” Thornton says. “We had to be apart a lot. So she said, When we’re apart, I thought this would be cool: She got two of those little lockets where you can open it up, put a picture of your grandma or whatever. And we got a little razor blade. We cut our fingers and we smeared a little blood on this locket, close it up, and wear it around your neck. It’s a romantic gesture.”
The press didn’t see it that way, and they certainly didn’t stop at just calling the gift a locket either. From there, Thornton says, the story became exaggerated until it was something like “a quart of blood” around their necks. “We’re vampires and we drink each other’s blood, we live in a dungeon. You know how that goes.”
The couple split after two years, but it wasn’t a bad breakup. “It was just that she wanted to live a different lifestyle, which was going around the world, working for the UN—doing great stuff,” says Thornton. “Me, I’m more of a here guy. But Angie is, to this day, one of my best friends. We talk all the time.”
Safe to say, Billy Bob Thornton does not live in a dungeon and drink blood. He may have worn the same suit to every award show and event for the past 20 years, but that’s a story for another day.
