Comedian Chris Rockgot candid with Saturday Night Live creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels.
Entertainment Weeklyreported that Rock, who had a three-year run as an SNL cast member until 1993, spoke about revisiting the Studio H8 stage for a Season 45 episode in the Netflix documentary about comedian Eddie Murphy, Being Eddie.
During the SNL episode, which aired in December 2019, Murphy, who departed the sketch comedy series as a cast member in 1984, made his return to the show as the host. During Murphy’s monologue, Rock appeared on stage alongside Dave Chappelle, Tracy Morgan, andKenan Thompson, per Michaels’ suggestion, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.
In Being Eddie, which premiered on November 12, Rock said he believed Murphy’s return to SNL was so good, Michaels, who started SNL in 1975, should have considered quitting the series, so he’d leave on a high note.
“It was one of the greatest SNLs ever. And I walked over to Lorne Michaels when it was over, and I said, ‘You should quit right now. It’s not gonna get any better than this,'” said Rock in the documentary, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.
As fans of the NBC comedy are aware, Michaels is still producing SNL. In a June 2024 interview with the New York Times, Michaels explained that he’ll remain at SNL “as long as [he] feel[s] [he] can do it.”
“But I rely on other people and always have,” explained Michaels to the publication.
Chris Rock Opened up About His Days on ‘SNL’
Rock opened up about his time working on SNL during a May 2021 interview on LIVE with Kelly and Mark. He shared that he joined the cast during its 16th season when he was around “22, 23,” shortly after his father, Julius Rock’s 1988 death. Rock said that the experience “was like the best of times and the worst of times.”
“I remember when I was on the show, me and [my SNL co-star] David Spade used to sit around and go, ‘Okay this is the greatest opportunity we’ve ever had. But if this is the biggest thing in our lives, we’re going to have horrible lives.’ So let’s start thinking about what we’re going to do after the show,'” said Rock in the 2021 interview.
He clarified that while working on the sketch comedy show could be difficult, “it was an amazing time in [his] life.” According to Rock, he’s still friends with his SNL castmates.
