Jennifer Aniston has shared intimate details about several significant aspects of her life, including her sorrow over something her late Friends co-star, Matthew Perry, never managed to experience before his death at 54.
The 56-year-old actress, who worked alongside Perry for ten years on the beloved sitcom Friends, mourned deeply along with fans worldwide and their fellow cast members when news of his passing broke in 2023.
Now, not long after cheekily addressing a popular moment involving her character Rachel from the hit sitcom, the Morning Show actress has revealed more about learning of Perry’s death.
In an interview with Elle Magazine, Aniston discussed receiving the devastating phone call about Perry’s passing, acknowledging that while it broke her heart, there was an element that didn’t come as a complete shock to her or their former co-stars–Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc.
“It was so alarming and shocking, yet not shocking,” she said. “[The Friends cast and I] always said, ‘I hope I never get that phone call.'”, reports the Mirror US.
While expressing how deeply he continues to be missed by all of them, she also revealed her sadness that he never found genuine happiness–something he candidly discussed pursuing throughout his battles with addiction in his memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.
“We miss him. He’s missed. He was a brilliant human being and an extraordinary talent, loved deeply, and wanted happiness more than anything,” she said. “It makes me sad that he never really achieved that, because he deserved it.”
Perry was discovered unresponsive in a hot tub at his Pacific Palisades, California home on October 28, 2023.
His demise was later attributed to the acute effects of Ketamine, along with the impacts of buprenorphine, drowning, and coronary artery disease.

A subsequent investigation into his death led to the indictment and charging of five individuals in August 2024, including his personal assistant, two physicians, and two drug dealers – one of whom is TV director Erik Fleming and another known as the “Ketamine Queen,” in relation to his death.
All five have since entered guilty pleas and face maximum sentences ranging from 10 to 45 years for their respective roles in the case.
In his memoir, Perry was candid about his long-standing battle with addiction, even confessing that he had no recollection of three years of his time on Friends.
He also revealed that his co-stars attempted to help him during the show’s later years, even staging an intervention, which unfortunately proved unsuccessful.
