Things to do, events and what's going on in Wilmington, NC

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, the Christmas lights are up in downtown Wilmington and the holiday events have already started to pop up on the schedule.

You’ll see a couple of those holiday events below, along with a nice mix of theater, some film screenings, a mini music festival and the final concert of the season at one of the Port City’s most beloved venues.

ALL WEEKEND

‘The Play That Goes Wrong’

Nov. 13-23 in the Mainstage Theatre, Cultural Arts Building, UNCW campus: The University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Department of Theatre presents this acclaimed farce about an on-stage murder mystery in which nothing goes to plan and hilarity ensues. Marks the the final play to be directed for UNCW Theatre by longtime professor Ed Wagenseller, who’s retiring from his post at the end of this year. 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13-15 and 20-22, 2 p.m. Nov. 16 and 23. Tickets are $6-$14.

‘Mrs. Doubtfire’

Nov. 14-15 at CFCC Wilson Center: Broadway tour of the musical based on the heartfelt movie comedy starring Robin Williams as a man who disguises himself as a British nanny in order to spend time with his kids. 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets start at $66.

‘Let the Right One In’

Nov. 13-22 at CFCC Wilson Center (studio theater): Cape Fear Community College’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts presents the stage adaptation of the 2008 vampire film. 7 p.m. Nov. 13 and 20-22, tickets are $5-$15.

‘Orion’s Choice’

Nov. 14-16 at Thalian Hall (studio theater): Original play by Wilmington writer Rose-Mary Harrington uses a light touch for a challenging subject: the relationship between an aging woman with Alzheimer’s (Elizabeth Michaels) and her estranged son (Josh Lowry). 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14-15, 2 p.m. Nov. 15-16. 910-632-2285.

ArtWorks Holiday Cheer Market

Nov. 15-16 at the ArtWorks: Search for one-of-a-kind Christmas gifts and decor at this fifth annual holiday market. More than three dozen area makers will be set up at this arts complex on Willard Street in the South Front District. With food and coffee trucks, cash bar. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, free to attend.

CAMMade Holiday Market

Nov. 15-16 at the Cameron Art Museum: Holiday market features crafts, artwork and seasonally themed items from more than 20 artists on Saturday, then 20-plus different artists on Sunday. 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, $5 admission good for both days.

FRIDAY

‘Dogtooth’

Nov. 14 at Jengo’s Playhouse: The film that started it all for acclaimed Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos (“Bugonia,” “The Favourite”). Bizarre and by turns hilarious and unsettling, 2009’s “Dogtooth” centers on a family whose patriarch has kept his children, who are adults by the time the film starts, completely sheltered from and ignorant of the outside world. 7:30 p.m. Friday, $10.

Shoot to Thrill

Nov. 14 at Bowstring Burgers and Brewyard: AC/DC tribute band plays the songs you know and love, with one big difference: All of the band’s members are women. 7 p.m. Friday, tickets start at $20.

Lipbone Redding

Nov. 14 at Live at Ted’s: Veteran North Carolina singer and songwriter Redding, an artist-in-residence at the Oak Grove Retreat in Tarboro, is a one-man band whose style incorporates old-timey jazz, folk, blues and more, not to mention wild vocalizations and unexpected percussion. 8 p.m. Friday, tickets are $25.

SATURDAY

‘Back to the Future’

Nov. 15 at Thalian Hall: 40th anniversary screening of this classic ’80s film, which has been re-released into theaters for the occasion. 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, tickets are $10 and $12.

Kicking Cancer Country Style Benefit

Nov. 15 at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater: Final concert of the season at this beloved Wilmington venue is this benefit show. Headliner is country singer Cody Webb, with supporting sets from Morgan Hudson, Taylor Bissette and Kamden Wayne. 5:30 p.m. Saturday, $42.50.

BonnaBrew Music Festival

Nov. 15 at Waterline Brewing: Day-long music festival headlined by Wilmington electronic duo Krispee Biscuits. With indie rockers Amberjack, electronic artist Jahva and blues singer Andrew Covil. With food trucks, vendors and more. 1-7 p.m. Saturday, free.

Sail On

Nov. 15 at Odell Williamson Auditorium: Touring tribute band will play the songs of The Beach Boys. 7 p.m. Saturday, tickets are $24-$47.
