King Charles turns 77 today and has been hit with his fair share of medical issues in recent years, including his cancer diagnosis.
There has been ongoing speculation about the King’s noticeably red and swollen fingers, often referred to as ‘Charles sausage fingers’ in Google Trends searches.
In recent years, public curiosity has increased, and it has been suggested that several factors may contribute to this surge.
One possible explanation is a condition called edema, which results in swelling in the arms and hands due to fluid accumulation; however, this condition can sometimes resolve on its own.
Symptoms of edema include swollen or puffy arms or hands, shiny, stretched, or red skin, which can also affect the ankles, legs, and feet, potentially explaining the King’s finger condition.
She explained: “King Charles III’s red and swollen fingers could be due to oedema, a condition that occurs when kidneys fail to function as they should.”
Relief from oedema symptoms can be achieved through simple but powerful lifestyle modifications, including elevating affected limbs using cushions or chairs whenever feasible.
The NHS also recommends incorporating regular light physical activity, such as walking, selecting roomy, comfortable footwear with low heels and cushioned soles, and maintaining proper hand and foot hygiene.
The health organization noted: “Treatment for swelling or oedema that does not go away on its own will depend on the cause.
“Speak to your GP about making lifestyle changes, such as losing weight or going on a low-salt diet.”
