Emmy-winning writer of The Simpsons, Dan McGrath, has passed away at the age of 61. His sister, Gail McGrath Garabadian, confirmed his death on Facebook on Saturday, November 15, writing, “We lost my incredible brother Danny yesterday. He was a special man, one of a kind. An incredible son, brother, uncle, and friend. Our hearts are broken.”
Dan passed away on Friday at NYU Langone Hospital following a stroke. He leaves behind his mother, Eleanor; his brother Michael and wife Caroline; his brother Peter; and his sister, Gail. Dan had an illustrious career in the entertainment industry, contributing to both The Simpsons and King of the Hill.
Between 1992 and 1994, Dan penned 50 episodes of The Simpsons and produced 24 episodes from 1996 to 1998. His work earned him an Emmy in 1997 for Outstanding Animated Program for the episode “Homer’s Phobia.”
The episode features director John Waters as a gay antiques dealer who becomes friends with Marge. However, when Marge introduces him to her family, Homer goes to great lengths to prevent John’s character from influencing Bart.
Other memorable The Simpsons episodes written by Dan include “Boy-Scoutz ‘n the Hood,
“The Devil and Homer Simpson,” and “Time and Punishment.” Interestingly, Dan claimed he had been let go from the show twice.
Beyond The Simpsons, Dan contributed to King of the Hill, earning writing credits on 11 episodes. His work included “Full Metal Dust Jacket” and “The Minh Who Knew Too Much.”
He also received producing credits across 28 episodes that broadcast from 2002 through 2010.
Before entering television, Dan wrote and edited for The Harvard Lampoon. His breakthrough came with Saturday Night Live in 1991, where he spent a year as a writer.
During his time there, he collaborated regularly with Chris Farley and Adam Sandler, earning an Emmy nomination in 1992 for his SNL contributions.
His additional television credits include Mission Hill, Sammy, The PJs, and Muppets Tonight. Following the announcement of his passing, colleagues and admirers have expressed their sympathies to Dan’s loved ones.
The Simpsons’ Bill Oakley posted on X, “R.I.P. today to Dan McGrath, great person and super-talented writer at The Simpsons, SNL, King of the Hill, and Mission Hill, where he was right-hand man to @Joshstrangehill and me — and responsible for the incredible Gus and Wally episode.
“He brought so much joy and peace to so many through the power of his words on the pages of the scripts he helped to build. You were a real one, Mr McGrath. You’ll never be forgotten,” one supporter wrote on the platform, while another commented, “What a gifted writer – may he rest in peace.”
An obituary for Dan has been released, stating, “His prodigious talents and singular personality will be missed by many devoted friends.”
In lieu of flowers, Dan’s family is asking for donations to be made to his alma mater, Regis High School in Manhattan.
