Alice and Ellen Kessler, the twin sisters who captivated audiences across postwar Europe with their synchronized performances on Italian television, have died at 89.

Authorities confirmed the deaths on Monday, after responding to a call at the sisters’ home in Grünwald, Germany, where they lived in adjoining flats separated by a sliding wall, Parade reports. Officials said no foul play was suspected.

According to German daily Bild, the twins chose medically assisted suicide, which is legal in Germany under strict rules requiring individuals to make the decision of their own free will.

Born in 1936 in Nerchau, the Kessler twins began performing as children with the Leipzig Opera ballet, Parade notes. After leaving East Germany for Düsseldorf in 1952, they toured Europe and the United States, working alongside entertainment legends including Frank Sinatra and Fred Astaire. By 19, they were performing with the Bluebell Girls at the Lido in Paris.

The sisters became household names in Italy during television’s golden age, appearing on popular shows including “Giardino d’inverno” and “Studio Uno.”

Their signature “Da-da-un-pa” routine, directed by Antonello Falqui, earned them widespread affection and the nickname “the nation’s legs.” Their careers spanned ballet, cabaret, and variety shows, making them recognizable figures throughout postwar Europe.

According to Bild, the sisters left a joint testament requesting their ashes be placed in a single urn alongside those of their mother, Elsa, and their dog, Yello.

“That’s what we stipulated in our will,” Ellen told the outlet in 2024, reflecting their wish to remain together after death.

If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, help is available.
