While Robert is making a name for himself every week on DWTS, fans know how much he tries to honor his father, the late wildlife conservationist Steve Irwin. While Robert has found different ways to celebrate his dad’s message throughout the season, he’s not just doing it on the dance floor.
As Robert shared in a sentimental TikTok on November 17, he has “good luck charms” he loves to wear ahead of filming DWTS. He showed off a tattered shirt of his dad’s and a ring made from melted-down keys to his childhood home. The social media personality shared how much it means to him to have Steve by his side in a more physical manner.
“Every show day on Dancing With the Stars, I have two good luck charms that I bring with me,” he said in the clip. “And I wanted to share it with you. These two things are a way to keep me close to home and to what’s most important to me—this ring and this shirt.”
So, how do the ring and shirt play a role in Robert’s pre-show routine? As he noted, he prefers to do the final rehearsal of the dance he’s performing while wearing them. He does it to keep himself grounded in what matters most in his life.
“I like that [the shirt] still looks and feels like [my dad],” he added. “This shirt definitely saw a lot. I guess it’s kind of a good example for how dad lived his life, at 100 percent … So, before you guys see my dance in costume, I’ve always done that dance at least once in dad’s shirt. It just keeps me close to home. It keeps me close to him. It just feels like a big hug every time I put it on.”
When fans saw the sentimental way Robert honors his late father before every performance, they couldn’t help but get teary-eyed.
“Imagine being a little boy and finally being able to fit into your dads clothes and wanting to keep his memory alive 🥰,” one person wrote in the comments. “Robert, you honor your Dad’s legacy in such a wonderful way. 🙏,” another declared. “🥹 You are so precious. Just a great human Robert. This is such a sweet way to remember your father,” a different follower added.
Even though it’s clear Robert makes sure to keep Steve’s memory alive, he’s also aware of how lucky he is to be on a show like Dancing With the Stars.
“I’m so grateful to represent a message and a legacy throughout this experience on @Dancing with the Stars,” he stated in the caption of another TikTok uploaded the same day.
