AUSTIN, Texas — The Paramount Theatre and State Theatre have sat next to each other for nearly 100 years, bringing live music and entertainment to Austinites. Now, the two theatres will undergo major renovations that ensure their future influence as cultural landmarks.
The Austin Theatre Alliance announced its plans Wednesday for a $65 million reimagining of the 110-year-old Paramount Theatre and the 90-year-old State Theatre. The nonprofit responsible for operating both venues said the renovations will honor their historic pasts while laying the groundwork for increased accessibility, enhanced patron experience and expanded programming opportunities that will “elevate Austin’s live performance landscape.”
The Paramount Theatre will shut its doors for an expected 8-9 months next June while renovations are underway. Following its completion, work will begin on the State Theatre, which is expected to last between 13 and 16 months.
Work to restore and preserve its legacy is long-overdue, the Austin Theatre Alliance said in a statement.
“Believe it or not, the Paramount Theatre has not undergone a full restoration in over five decades. And this identity-defying transformation of the State has been a long time coming,” said Austin Theatre Alliance’s Chief Development Officer Maica Jordan. “It’s really going to have a huge impact on downtown Austin.”
Both renovations will concentrate on improving the guest experience and expanding accessibility.
The updated Paramount Theatre will boast refurbished seating; evolved sound, lighting and wiring technology; and restored paintwork, chandeliers and molding. The theatre’s original blueprints also inspired the creation of a new lounge, which will emulate a ballroom that never made it into the final 1915 design.
The Austin Theatre Alliance said they envision a complete transformation for the Paramount’s historical neighbor. The State will receive a full interior remodel that honors its original art déco façade. The newly imagined venue will also expand its seating capacity and include two cocktail areas, as well as space for local arts nonprofits to host events.
The project has already raised $27 million, but the Austin Theatre Alliance is inviting all to “invest in the future of these buildings.” The nonprofit is currently heading its campaign, SHINE ON, to rally support and resources for the project.
“For a combined 200 years, these two historic venues have enriched the Austin community by shining a light on the very best in music, comedy, movies, thought-provoking speakers and beyond,” said Austin Theatre Alliance CEO/Executive Director Jim Ritts. “Much more than entertainment — the Paramount & State change the way people see the world. And now they need Austin’s help to make sure they ‘shine on’ for everyone to enjoy for the next century.
