According to Empire Magazine, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher will not be returning in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. Given the character’s fate at the end of Season 1, it is somewhat surprising that Bernthal won’t be returning for the second season. Despite some fan outcry, there is a big reason he isn’t appearing in the next season of The Man Without Fear’s epic odyssey. It is more than likely that the Punisher is set to receive his own standalone project in the near future, and the character has already been set to appear in the next Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. If Daredevil: Born Again receives a third season, there’s nothing stopping The Punisher from making another appearance in the series.
Like Charlie Cox’s performance as Matthew Murdock, many consider Jon Bernthal the quintessential adaptation of Frank Castle. He embodies the iconic character in a way that no other actor could replicate while truly making the performance his own. Marvel has recognized this and decided to use the actor for more important and impactful projects.
Although he played an integral role in Season 1, it’s very likely that the Punisher wouldn’t have as large an impact on this season. The series is called Daredevil: Born Again, not Daredevil and Punisher: Born Again. Still, a certain group of fans has assumed that Jon Bernthal’s absence from the new season will heavily impact the show as a whole. Some of these fans even believed that his leave from the show meant that the Punisher was being recast, but these rumors were quickly put to rest.
Thankfully, Season 2 is set to be even bigger than the first season and is rumored to have several important characters of its own. The leaked trailer from NYCC outright confirms that Jessica Jones will be finally making her MCU return, which raises more questions than it answers. Jones’ return has led some to speculate that Finn Jones’ Iron Fist and Mike Colter’s Nick Cage will also make a reappearance. Yet, only time will tell if the characters actually make their way into the MCU.
The only reason Bernthal is even missing Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is that the actor is receiving his own projects. He has been confirmed for a Disney Limited Series and is set to make an appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Nothing about his role in the film has been revealed so far, but fans have been able to make inferences given both characters’ performances in their respective MCU media. Many fans believe that The Punisher will begin as an antagonist that will turn into an ally and a somewhat twisted father-figure for Peter in his adulthood.
Either way, these appearances confirm that the actor will continue to play the Punisher well into the next phase of the MCU, even though he isn’t appearing in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. Interestingly enough, Marvel has been somewhat hesitant to disclose whether or not Daredevil will appear in The Punisher limited series. However, given the characters’ complex relationship, it’s more than likely that Charlie Cox’s Matthew Murdock will make at least a cameo appearance. Nevertheless, even though The Punisher won’t appear in Daredevil Season 2, he is sure to be heavily mentioned.
