A royal expert has decribed moving into Frogmore Cottage as the “final straw” for Meghan Markle prior to the decision to step away from royal life. The five-bedroom royal home in Windsor was a wedding present to Prince Harry and Meghan from the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2018.
The couple lived in the home until their move to the US in early 2020, with the property also the first home that Prince Archie lived in. After finding out that they were to live in the property, Meghan reportedly said: “I don’t want to retire to rural obscurity”.
Royal author Tom Quinn has now said that Meghan wasn’t happy with the “tiny” home, adding that it appeared to be the “final straw” prior to their major decision to step away from royal life.
As shared in his book, Kensington Palace, Mr Quinn revealed that Harry and Meghan had hoped that a move to Windsor would be “the perfect retreat from what they saw as an unsympathetic, unfair world of media speculation and criticism”.
However, the 44-year-old wasn’t happy with the location of the home. According to an insider, “Meghan realised that living [at Frogmore Cottage] would be like living in the Russian steppe.
“Its remoteness made Kensington seem like the centre of the universe”.
During their tenancy at the property, Meghan and Harry’s decision to use £2.4million of taxpayers money to turn the property into a “Californian condo” caused controversy. Despite this, after it came to light, Harry repaid the full amount and the couple have not had access to the property since 2023 after they officially vacated the home.
Royal fans were given a glimpse into their time at Frogmore Cottage in the couple’s 2022 Netflix series, Harry & Meghan.
One clip showed sweet bathtime scenes with their son, who was born in May 2019 and spent the first few months of his life at the home.
Having now relocated to the US, the couple now reside in a multi-million-pound mansion in Montectio with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
