Meghan Markle has been criticized for maintaining her royal connections following her recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar.

The Duchess of Sussex featured in the latest edition of the American magazine, sparking controversy for a variety of reasons, including being formally introduced by her royal title to the interviewer, despite having left The Firm five years ago.

Meghan sat down with Kaitlyn Greenidge from Harper’s Bazaar for an interview at a friend’s house in New York. Describing the meeting, Kaitlyn said, “We’re in a grand brownstone on the Upper East Side that belongs to one of Meghan’s friends. When I enter, the house manager announces, ‘Meghan, Duchess of Sussex,’ even though we appear to be the only other two people in the house.”

In addition to breaking protocol with the introduction, as it should have been the guest who was announced, Meghan faced backlash for her continued use of her royal title.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex still hold their titles and HRH style, but they do not use the latter in a commercial context following a mutual agreement with the British royal family.

Renae Smith, founder and director of The Atticism, told the Daily Express, “From a PR perspective, it is such a bad idea,” adding, “It is confusing, it is provocative in the wrong way, and it puts her straight back beneath the royal shadow she always bloody insists she wants to get away from.”

The PR expert further noted that “it’s not hard to avoid anything royal,” quipping, “She can’t go two weeks without doing something linked back to the royal family!”

However, Renae believes that Prince Harry may be in favor of this, saying, “I guess Harry might love it. I would assume she checked with him first, and he probably told her it was lovely.”

“Strategically, it is terrible. She flips between authentic feminist, glossy royal adjacent icon, and influencer lifestyle entrepreneur, and none of it connects,” she further stated. “Yes, she absolutely contradicts herself. She keeps saying she wants distance from the royal world, and then she recreates the most iconic imagery of it.”

Meghan’s Harper’s Bazaar interview comes as her children, Archie and Lilibet, made a rare appearance with their parents to take on some charitable work as part of their Archewell Foundation.

The youngsters joined their parents at Our Big Kitchen in Los Angeles, a community-operated, non-denominational facility that provides meals for those in need across the city. During their time at the establishment, the children, six and four, donned caps featuring the Our Big Kitchen branding and were photographed enthusiastically participating in meal preparation activities.

Royal fans quickly responded to the sweet moment, with one X user writing, “I love that Archie and Lili are growing up with the biggest gift we can ask for. The gift of choice. Their lives are not predetermined, and they are not pigeon-holed like their dads. One isn’t being disparaged to prop the other. Both will be able to walk through life choosing their own path.”

A second person then added, “Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet are volunteering for the holidays! #showupdogood.”
