Prince Harry agonised over the design of Meghan Markle‘s 2017 engagement ring – so is she just confirming her ‘Duchess Difficult’ nickname by altering it three more times? It’s probably apt that an actress-come-duchess who once starred in a TV show called ‘Suits’ clearly wears the trousers in the Sussex household.
Personality is never easy to read so instead there are certain things in life we do – or others do around us – that can offer fascinating windows into our souls. When you meet someone for the first time, you often make an instant judgement about them not just by how they interact with you but their interactions with their work colleagues, friends, children and partner.
We have all met a ‘friend of a friend’ and after a few seconds thought to ourselves: “What a complete …. !” But we then pause to think: “If my mate is friends with him – there must be something about this person, deeper than their offputting bluster?”
During the Battle of Crecy in 1346, the loyal knights of the blind King John of Bohemia were so devoted to him, they tied their horses’ bridles to his to ensure his wishes to lead his army into the fray, even though it meant certain death.
Admittedly, that says a lot about feudal loyalty but it also speaks volumes for King John too. They were happy and ready to die at his side.
So if 22 employees have quit working with 44 year-old Meghan in six years – nine desperate to get out of there since they moved to Montecito, California – and many citing her as being “difficult”, these are what we call serious ‘red flags’.
Ok, now let’s look at this ring, it’s original creation and then three later changes.
After Prince William, 43, picked their mother Princess Diana’s blue sapphire diamond to propose to Kate Middleton, Harry enlisted the late Queen’s regular jeweller, Cleave & Company, to design a unique jewel for his own bride-to-be.
Harry, 41, even snuck a ring from Meghan’s jewellery box so that the designers knew her size and, so his mother would ‘bless’ their marriage, harvested diamonds from one of Diana’s bracelets for the design – with a large blood-free diamond from Botswana, the African country where he and Meghan fell in love on their third date.
When he finally got down on one knee on November 4th, 2017, in the gardens of Kensington Palace’s Nottingham Cottage, the glittering ring was valued at over £120,000 with a solid yellow gold band with the three diamonds.
But since then, it is believed the ring has already been altered three times!
If Mrs R kept changing her engagement ring I reckon she’s telling me A – I didn’t know what jewellery she liked in the first place, and B – Therefore I clearly don’t know her. She hasn’t (phew!)
In June 2019 Meghan was spotted wearing the ring with a thinner band than its original design. She also had little diamonds set down the sides of the ring, in what one jewellery expert hinted was a more “American style”.
In 2022 there was further speculation that Meghan altered the ring again when it was seen, at the Invictus Games in The Hague, to have additional diamonds to the setting surrounding the central diamond.
Then earlier this year, royal fans noted that the ring’s central diamond looked more like an emerald cut than the original cushion cut when it was seen in a trailer for Meghan’s Netflix series.
Returning to Meghan’s reported personality, a brutal 2025 new report by the Hollywood Reporter claimed Meghan had been dubbed ‘Duchess Difficult’ by her US staff for – allegedly – ‘belittling’ people and ‘marching around like a dictator in high heels, fuming and barking orders’.
The publication also claimed Meghan is ‘absolutely relentless’ towards her employees, with Harry dubbed ‘a very, very charming person’ and yet ‘very much an enabler’ – and both Sussexes ‘poor decision makers’ who ‘change their minds frequently’.
Meghan was once accused of bullying palace staff before the pair’s move to California, prompting royal aides to launch an inquiry into claims of Meghan’s ‘belittling’ behaviour towards two personal assistants.
Details of the report were never revealed and the allegations have always been strongly denied by the duchess, whose lawyers described them at the time as a “calculated smear campaign”.
What does all this say about her? Meghan and Harry are the sort of power couple that clearly rely on a close circle of friends and without being derogitory or demeaning, ‘minions’ like personal assistants and PRs.
But how many of Meghan’s ‘loyal knights’ would and will keep tying their bridles to hers and charge with her on a seemingly endless ‘woke’ crusade?
Judging by their predecessors’ actions in bolting off into the blue, if they have any sense they’ll all wheel their steeds round too and gallop the other way!
