During a podcast interview last week in Philadelphia at the MLB All-Star game, Maggie Witt deftly compared Chiefs fans to Royals followers and shared how her shortstop husband, Bobby Witt Jr., wooed her in high school.

Apparently Snapchat and smoothies did the trick.

Witt also had to educate “Not So Little” host Kendall Vertes on the fact that the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals do, in fact, play in the same city when Vertes appeared confused on that point.

Singer/dancer/TV personality Vertes, with nearly 11 million followers on Instagram, found fame as one of the first child dancers featured on the Lifetime show “Dance Moms.”

Maggie and Bobby were already high school sweethearts when the Royals drafted the Texas teen right out of high school in 2019. They married in December 2024 in Dallas, inviting all the Royals players.

Bobby was slow out of the gate in the teen romance game.

“I was in the grade above him, he loves to remind me of that,” Maggie laughed. “He actually was supposed to be in my grade. I might be totally making this up but I’m pretty sure he started kindergarten late because his dad (Bobby Witt Sr.) was in the MLB.

“His dad played for 16 years in the MLB and the year he started kindergarten was the year his dad won the World Series. So I feel like that’s why, I think that’s why he started late unless I’m making this up.”

She was a junior, then, when Bobby was a sophomore. “And back then, you could make your own schedule,” she said.

So Bobby got her schedule from Maggie’s best friend. “And the only class that he could take with an upperclassman was physics,” she said. “So we were in physics together and he sat behind me … and didn’t talk to me like for the first three months.

“He’s very shy.”

But then they worked on a group project together, exchanged phone numbers and Bobby made his first move on Snapchat.

“I’d actually just like broken up with a previous boyfriend and (Bobby) was like ‘oh you’re so beautiful, you deserve better,’ all this stuff. And I was like that’s so sweet,” said Maggie.

“But he put the big guns on when he started leaving smoothies on my car after softball practice every day with a note.”

Maggie was a gifted athlete in her own right, a star softball player at Colleyville Heritage High School who went on to play shortstop and third base at Northwestern State University of Louisiana.

She was a college freshman when the Royals drafted Bobby. “And then after that he was doing his thing in Arizona and I was doing mine in Louisiana,” she said.

Vertes asked Witt how she felt about the word “WAG,” a shorthand term used to describe wives and girlfriends of professional athletes.

Some wives and girlfriends balk at the label, calling it demeaning shorthand that gives short shrift to a woman’s own worth.

In Kansas City, Witt is one of the best-known Royals wife, active on social media and an organizer of many events involving other spouses.

“I don’t care, I really don’t,” Witt said. “I guess some people care … I don’t take it personally … I mean, it’s true.”

Vertes, who mentioned she hails from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, seemed a little confused on geography when she asked Witt if Kansas City is considered the Midwest.

“Yeah, I think so,” said Witt.

“This might be such a dumb question,” said Vertes. “The Kansas City Chiefs are also …?”

“Yes,” said Witt, confirming that the Royals and Chiefs play in the same city.

“Just to be sure,” said Vertes. “I’m not really good at geography. So I just had to get that out of the way.”

Witt told her the Royals and Chiefs stadiums are next to each other and are connected by an underground tunnel.

“How’s your fan base, because Phillies fan base, they kind of take the cake for craziest,” Vertes said. “Do the Royals have like a really passionate fan base?”

“The word I would say for Kansas City fans is loyal,” Witt said. “They’re super loyal … I don’t know, this might (ruffle) some feathers but I feel like they’re really passionate about the Chiefs … which makes sense … they bring so much to Kansas City.

“The Royals do as well but there’s a lot of passion in football and in baseball they’re just so loyal.

“It’ll be a Wednesday afternoon game, it’s hot as crap outside, and like you’re still gonna get people going there.”

And speaking of the Chiefs. Well, one particular Chiefs WAG, at least.

Vertes asked if Witt has ever seen Taylor Swift in Kansas City.

Witt said she’s seen the new wife of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce at games since the suites they watch games from are near each other. But she’s never seen Swift “in the wild” of Kansas City.
