KINGSTON, N.Y. — The new Tempo in the Park World Music Festival brings internationally touring and local acts to Cornell Park on Saturday, July 25, from 12 to 8 p.m.
Radio Kingston will host two stages with a dozen bands.
Featured genres at the free festival include Mexican Banda, Guinean Afro-beat, Arabic-Yemeni folk, Balkan brass, World-Beat garage jazz and an Irish session on the main stage. A second stage will host local acts presenting Afro-Cuban drumming, choral pieces from Georgia, Ukraine and the Balkans, Indian classical, Latinx folk, and Old Time and Cajun fiddling.
The Main Stage Schedule features O’Sullivan’s March, a quartet featuring accordion, guitar, bazouki and Uilleann pipes playing in the traditional Irish session style at 1 p.m.
Then at 2:05 p.m. is Mac’nCheez Balkan Power Trio, modeled on traditional village wedding bands found throughout the southern Balkans. The group, featuring sax, accordion & tapan drum, is sure to get the audience on their feet dancing, TEMPO said in a news release.
Performing at 3:10 p.m. is El Khat, an internationally touring trio with a unique Arabic-Yemeni style, percussive roots and inspired by Middle Eastern pop, filtered through a DIY garage approach.
At 4:15 p.m. is local fixture Juma Sultan, composer of Hendrix band fame, performing a set featuring worldbeat jazz alongside his local band of all-stars, the organizers said.
Then at 5:20 p.m., Mandingo Ambassadors share the sound of Guinean Afro-Jazz. Founded in New York City by griot-guitarist Manady Kouyaté, the band will share a full electric performance, the organizers said.
Closing out the Mainstage at 6:25 p.m. will be Banda Land Tumbadora, a popular Mexican brass band from Newburgh, “known for their traditional brass and percussion-heavy banda sound,” an announcement said.
The second stage lineup will include Afro-Cuban drumming with Richard Marquez at 12:30 p.m., Driftwood Chorus sharing polyphonic songs from Eastern Europe and beyond at 1:45 p.m., Vinay Desai Duo’s classical Indian Santoor and Tabla at 2:50 p.m., Pueblos Tristes at 3:55 p.m., the TEMPO Old Time All-Stars at 5 p.m. and closing with Lapin Coquin Cajun at 6:05 p.m.
Food and coffee vendors will include Las Camelias Oaxacan Delicacies, Ariana Afghan Feast, Rams Valley Caribbean BBQ and Stir Up Colombian Coffee Truck, a beer, wine and cider bar presented by TEMPO Performing Arts Center and a kids zone hosted by MyKingstonKids.
“This is the first annual Kingston World Music Festival, with a vision to grow into a beloved summer tradition for the Hudson Valley,” TEMPO said in the release.
In the event of rain, the event will move inside TEMPO Performing Arts Center, located across the street from Cornell Park in the historic former Trinity Methodist Church at 29 Wurts St.
