George Clooney has revealed that he once lost a movie role to Brad Pitt early in their careers, which now span several decades.
The actor, who recently starred in Jay Kelly, shared that he and his good friend were both up for the same part in the early nineties, but Brad ended up snagging it.
In an new interview, George reminisced, “So, I was in TV. I was making a good living, but back then actors would say, ‘Well, I’m a film actor – I just happen to be doing TV.'”
George, 64, then confirmed to The Times that he had taken the the “final test” for the role of J.D. in the hit 1991 film Thelma and Louise, but lamented, “motherf–ker, Brad got it.”
Thelma and Louise served as a launching pad for Brad’s career in Hollywood. His performance, along with those of leading ladies Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, contributed to the film’s success, reports the Mirror US.
For years, George refused to watch the film because he was still bitter about losing the role in the Oscar-winning film to the Mr. and Mrs. Smith star.
“I didn’t watch Thelma and Louise for years because I was annoyed. The part launched his film career. He was doing sitcoms and crap before, so when it was the thing that could’ve launched me? F–k,” George confessed.
Even today, Brad, whom George regards as both a friend and fellow actor, continues to playfully rib the silver-haired star about landing the role instead of him.
George revealed that the father-of-six still “gives him s–t,” but it wasn’t until he finally viewed Thelma and Louise that the father-of-two understood Brad was the perfect choice to play J.D.
In the movie, J.D. goes shirtless during one of the sequences in Thelma and Louise, which explains why George believed Brad was the superior casting decision.
Chiming in on the matter was George’s Jay Kelly co-star Adam Sandler, 59, who confirmed that he witnessed audiences going “nuts” when Brad “took his shirt” off during his theater viewing experience.
Performers who were considered for the J.D. role and advanced to the final auditions alongside George and Brad included Grant Show, 63, and Mark Ruffalo, 58.
Over the course of their careers, George and Brad have appeared on screen together and most recently collaborated in the 2024 thriller Wolfs.
