The Duchess of Sussex has consistently demonstrated her disdain for Royal life, openly ridiculing traditions like curtsying to the late Queen before departing for California in 2020 when she and Prince Harry stepped back from their working Royal duties.
Despite this, Meghan continues to cling to her Royal connections, most notably during a viral scene in her Netflix show, With Love, Meghan.
When Hollywood actress and writer Mindy Kaling addressed her as ‘Meghan Markle’, the Duchess quickly corrected her preferred title: “It’s so funny too, that you keep saying ‘Meghan Markle‘ – you know I’m Sussex now.”
The exchange baffled viewers, with many pointing out that Sussex is a title, not a surname.
Similarly, in her recent Harper’s Bazaar cover story, writer Kaitlyn Greenidge noted that Meghan was formally introduced twice during their encounters.
She wrote: “A golf cart pulls up, gravel crunching under its tyres. ‘The Duchess of Sussex,’ someone announces. Meghan steps out in wide-leg trousers, a silk blouse, and pavé-diamond studs by Ukrainian brand Guzema.”
During their second meeting, Ms Greenidge observed: “When I enter, the house manager announces, “Meghan, Duchess of Sussex,” even though we appear to be the only other two people in the house.”
Royal experts suggest her persistent use of these Royal titles reveals she understands her privileged position is temporary.
Tom Sykes, a correspondent for The Daily Beast, commented: “Meghan Markle’s frantic insistence on the title of Duchess is an attempt to imprint her family’s royal connections on the public before their inevitable removal.”
Sykes, who firmly believes that Prince William could strip the Sussexes of their dukedom when he ascends the throne, speculated that it might be a strategic move to enhance Meghan’s brand.
The revocation of Andrew’s title has fueled further conjecture about the Royal Family stripping them of their titles. Sharon Hunt, writing for the Daily Mail, suggested: “With that in mind, the strategy seems simple: roll out ‘Duchess’ as often as possible and keep the Sussex name front and center – just in case.”
The Sussex theme has been a consistent thread for some time. In a March interview with People, Meghan expressed how much the Sussex name means to her because it links her to her family.
“It’s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn’t recognized how meaningful that would be to me until we had children,” Meghan shared. “I love that that is something that Archie, Lili, H and I all have together. It means a lot to me.”
She did not specify whether she legally changed her last name to Sussex.
During an interview with Bloomberg, journalist Emily Chung tried to confirm whether Meghan had legally changed her name, but Meghan skillfully dodged the question, replying: “It’s a dukedom.”
She further stated: “So, that’s the truth of it. But at the end of the day, you know, yes. My legal name is Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, but Sussex for us works as our family name and it’s the name that we share with our children.”
